In a West Texas town called Thurber the Texas Pacific Coal coal company and Oil Company grew rich digging coal, drilling oil coal company and making bricks from the clay soil. The Texas Pacific Company as it was known at its beginning, was born in 1888 just seventy-five miles west of Fort Worth. Employing mostly immigrant workers in the coal mines, the company prospered coal company and created a town eventually called Thurber. The company added a brick works in 1894. For several years Thurber rivaled Fort Worth as the largest population coal company and cultural center for the region. The discovery of the famous Ranger oil fields in 1917 by the company`s general manager, W. K. Gordon, began not only a whole new chapter in the development coal company and expansion of the company, but also in the growth of Texas. The company survived by both anticipating coal company and adapting to the changing economy until its eventual sale in 1963. The latter part of the book offers an insider`s look into the post-World War II development of Fort Worth, including the political maneuverings of the last chairman of the company, H. B. Fuqua. Through photographs, newspaper articles, company archives, coal company and oral recollections, the reader catches a glimpse of the life coal company and times of the people coal company and events that shaped the socioeconomic growth of the region from its beginnings, through wars, the Depression, coal company and post-war booms. The year is 1920, the setting Matewan, West Virginia, where the town's coal miners labor under miserable, unhealthy conditions. Enter Joe Kenehan (Chris Cooper), a rebellious union leader who wants to organize the West Virginian miners, as well as the Italians coal company and blacks brought in as workers. Based on a real massacre in Matewan that started the 1920-1921 Coal War between miners coal company and coal company thugs, MATEWAN subverts the convention of Westerns like HIGH NOON. Kenehan is not the drifter who will save the miners with his skill at a six-shooter; rather, he is a pacifist whose message of non-violent resistance the miners have difficulty accepting. The story is divided into four parts, alternating between times when Kenehan prevails coal company and times when the instinct for revenge against the coal company wins out. The first large-scale historical epic made by director John Sayles (who once worked in the Meat Packer's Union), MATEWAN is a subtle strike against the anti-union climate of the 1980s coal company and a moving portrait of the difficulties of collective action.
