Big Coal

In this investigative report, journalist Jeff Goodell explains just how much the American economy depends on coal--mostly for generating electricity--and the high cost of that dependence on the environment burning coal and on American?s health burning coal and safety. Coal is plentiful and, by some measures, a relatively cheap source of power; importantly, it is mined in the U.S., burning coal and so we are not coal dependent on other nations as we are with oil. But, as Goodell notes, the mining industry is notoriously unsafe, as evidenced by Goodell?s report on a Pennsylvania mining disaster in 2002.Goodell also reports on the worldwide coal picture, citing China as the biggest global polluter. Goodell?s remedies include several promising new technologies that might mitigate some of the harmful effects of coal burning.
